When starting this new P&S site I added some photos starting at Brockway and working south, rather like the idea so decided to make it a special page.

Brockway was the beginning of the Pittsburg & Shawmut, here’s a photo from 1955 at Brockway from my collection.

Let’s go back to 1955 for a look at Dellwood Junction Brockway, B&O tracks in the foreground with the P&S interchange track going downhill, photo most likely taken from Lanes Viaduct. The P&S tracks over the B&O and Rt 219 head into Brockway Yard then the glass plant at the far north end of the P&S.

Here’s P&S 232 & 237 on the south side of Brookville Yard in 1971. The tracks on the right sloping downhill are to the Low Grade, once the Pennsylvania Railroad. In later years that became the Shawmut’s new section and was named The Mountain Laurel.

Brookville Yard was the home of the Shawmut’s engine house and shops, here’s a mix of power next to the engine shops during the transition from Red & Yellow switchers to Bicentennial Red, White, and Blue.

Just south of Brookville was a small yard known as Rayard, the yard included a scale and was used for various things over the years. Here’s a northbound at Rayard with a loaded coal train.

To go with the previous Rayard photo here’s another from Corrie, in this Stan Short photo from June 1991 this northbound is passing the scale house at Rayard, known as “RA” on the Shawmut. Being the later years this train is sporting GP7 #10.

Our next stop along the Shawmut Line is a BVL1 at Knoxdale tunnel in 1991 from David Baer.

Now David is at East Branch viaduct in 1992 with a southbound with both P&S and Mountain Laurel power and a caboose on the way to pick up coal loads. Trestles on the Pitsburg & Shawmut were usually called viaducts.

Next stop on our little journey from Railroad North to Railroad South along the P&S R.R. is another great photo from David Baer at Sprankle Viaduct, this is the same train as in the East Branch photo above only now northbound with a loaded coal train. Between East Branch and Sprankle Mills is Coulter Tunnel at milepost 35, but I haven’t been able to locate any photos yet, access was the likely reason.

Here is another nice photo from David at Sprinkle Mills Viaduct with a nice mix of a SW9 GP7 SW9 GP7 & SW9 set of power.

Not far railroad south of Sprankle Mills and around the bend was Mauk Tunnel at Milepost 39, Kurt Reisweber was on hand to catch a northbound exiting Mauk Tunnel in October 1973, the red and yellow switchers go well with the fall colors! If this photo looks familiar, it’s in Kurt and Brad’s P&S Morning Sun book, Kurt sent this to me around 2005.

One of the most important and strategic locations on the Pittsburg & Shawmut, especially in the later years, was the huge coal loading facility at Dora, milepost 42, just about the middle of the railroad. Here’s a photo from 1987 where BVL1 was working. This spot is railroad north of the crossroads in Downtown Dora. Just to the south was Ringgold siding. At one time Sunnyside Mine was near Ringgold siding, the town of Ringgold isn’t that close to this spot, but it was likely given the name since the mines reached back towards the town.

In the Shawmut’s later years Jeff Van Cleve was at Dora on a cold, snowy day where a train powered by Mountain Laurel GP10’s was working.

In the early 1970’s Kurt Reisweber caugh a local at Ringgold siding, the black switcher was an Ex BAR switcher e sent to Brookville to have some work done on it and was used on the P&S briefly.

Again at Ringgold Siding in the early 1970’s just before the Bicentennial Switchers era were these two SW9’s. By then the factory paint was fading fast so most of the switchers were repainted and many just had Pittsburg & Shawmut lettering dropping “Railroad.”

This is one of my favorite P&S photos sent in years ago by S. Kolata, one of the Brookville locals is working at Ringgold with an awesome mix of power!

This photo from David Baer is at Timblin milepost 44, right in the middle of the 88 mile P&S. The P&S is personal to me since my grandfather worked for the P&S on the track gang and lived in Timblin. The photo was taken from Railroad St. where a southbound was passing through. The white house at the upper left of the headlight of the lead locomotive was my great aunt and uncles. Also on Railroad St. to the right lived long time Timblin station agent Elmer Shick!

The previous Timblin photo was on the railroad north end of town, now we move south to the Timblin station in early years! Great photo sent in by Sam Kanish.

Another at Timblin in 1972 looking north, the only thing significant about this photo is it is one of very few photos that I took. THIS is why you all have been such a major part of keeping the P&S alive here online!

Next stop heading south was known as Markle, here Kurt Reisweber caught a southbound led by P&S 237 crossing one of the many tiny creeks in the area. Also at Markle was a well known local swimming hole known as the “Gravel Pit.”

Markle was home to many coal loaders and sidings over the years and here was a Brookville local working one, another from Kurt Reisweber.

Railroad south of Markel was McWilliams, this was one of the oddities along the P&S, place names on the railroad weren’t always at the same spot as towns with the same name. Here Tim caught a MOW crew working the McWilliams area, like Markel there were coal loaders over the years..

David Baer took a look at Colwell from the Rt 28-66 bridge over P&S.
David also caught a look there from the other side during Mountain Laurel days.
Going way back here’s the old coal loader at Colwell.
Railroad south of McWilliams at milepost 51 was perhaps the most spectacular scene on the P&S, what was known as The Twin Trestles at Pine Run with Mudlick Viaduct, a coal loader at Pine Run, then Sugar Camp Viaduct where two tiny creeks emptied into Mahoning Creek. Here, at Mudlick a train with five locomotives pulls northbound as fall colors added more decoration to the scene.
In beautiful fall colors from below a northbound rolls over Sugar Camp viaduct, also known as Nitro. In the foreground is Mahoning Creek.
Here’s the same scene many years earlier with no fall colors or greens and a northbound with red and yellow SW9’s and one of the two bay window cabooses made out of boxcars! Somewhere I have a photo at Pine Run between the twin viaducts, will add if I find it.

Since this was such a remote location on the P&S, here’s a cool aerial view of Mudlick Viaduct during the green season.
Now from high above here’s Sugar Camp Viaduct!
Kurt Reisweber sent this photo at “Nitro” when P&S had one of the ex BAR switchers to Brookville for work, common on the Shawmut.

Sam Kanish sent along these two photos. First, a northbound crosses under the Rt 28-66 bridge and over Mahoning Creek. Above that a northbound is at Reesedale on the bridge over PRR and The Allegheny where Mahoning empties into the Allegheny.

Bill Bueller sent along these photos of the power plant at Reesedale. The bottom photo is the dumper building.
Here’s a peek at the West End Power Plant at Reddco’s switcher.
Kurt Reisweber caught KGL1 in 1979 passing the connection to the West Mosgrove area with engines 1775 & 1949.
Here’s a northbound at the Kittanning station.
The Shawmut Engine house at Kittanning/Applewold was sparce compared to Brookville!
But not on this day in 1992!
Kurt was also on hand for the 235 and 237 in the Kittanning area.
Jim Hoover sent this of the Route 422 bridge at Kittanning when the P&S tracks were just being laid!
Sam Kanish sent along this of the 231 at Linde Air Products south of Kittanning as well as other shots at the Linde Plant including the Linde Alco.
End of the line Milepost 88, Freeport with a conrail coal train!
John Hartman shared his awesome look at a KGL1 out on Conrail just south of the Freeport Jct. with Conrail.
