Having to start the P&S site over while not having the previous version to look at has been quite a challenge and I keep thinking of forgotten things and one of them is P&S coal hoppers so here we go! Of course the main focus of railroad photos is usually locomotives so sometimes rolling stock gets let off!
Here is a fine example of a Shawmut 55 ton hopper used for decades. The P&S also used hoppers from other railroads, Erie, etc. in earlier years, but from around the 1970’s until the end they mostly used their own coal hoppers. From 1954 in this Richard Cook photo at Markle is a good example of other railroad cars on the P&S. This new section will require further research, but here’s a cool example of the later years when the P&S started using 100 ton cars. There was a mix of logos and lettering. Some, not pictured here had Pittsburg & Shawmut in white letters in the upper area, then the P&S started using “SHAWMUT LINE.” The middle car’s lettering was lower here, the left car had the hexagon logo with white letters inside a black double arrow while the middle car had the hexagon logo with white double arrow and black lettering. The far right car had the red and white version of the former PS&N logo! Here’s a most interesting hopper, number 1000 with no logo! Perhaps a new car pressed into service and not finished! Former Frisco 55 ton hopper numbered PS45 was likely maintenance car for ballast.P&S hopper 1541 is a fine example of the typical coal hoppers used from the 1970’s until the end, of course cars like this appeared along with the SW9’s being repainted red, white, and blue for the 1976 Bicentennial celebration.
